Adoption Policies

Cats:  minimum $150. Yes! It does sound like a lot, but this is less than the cost to bring your pet to most veterinary clinics for the services already performed.  Funds may be available from a sponsor for special situations.

Other pets (rabbits, ferrets, dogs, chinchillas...etc.):  fees vary depending on animal type, age,...etc.

ADOPTION INFORMATION

To adopt an animal you must complete these steps:

1. Fill out the three page Pre-Adoption Information.

2. Wait for approval from at least three Board Members.

3. Select your pet either before, after, or during the first two steps.

4. Obtain all necessary supplies for your new pet before or when you pick it up.

5. Complete the Final Adoption Form before leaving the Windmill Animal Rescue with your new forever friend.

Pay the necessary adoption fee after approval and before leaving with your pet.

Because of the shelter circumstances, the cats are indoor/outdoor kitties. It is preferred, but not required, that they spend their lives as indoor, non-declawed cats (some cats arrive already declawed). Most cats use the litter-boxes regularly, but they are in a situation where it is impossible to be sure so we recommend that you start your new cat confined in a small area where his/her litter box will be located and gradually increase the roaming area over two or more weeks. This is recommended protocol for cats in general when relocating, even when a person moves to a new house this is a good idea for their own cat (along with a product such as Feloway) These pets need a forever home with lots of love and attention.

*   The adoption policy is applicable in full for the adoption of dogs or cats.  Some of the adoption requirements may be waived for other animal adoptions based upon the needs and longevity of the animal and upon the discretion of the shelter manager or director.
